Title:Milwaukee Flag Design
Medium: Paint program
2015
Exhibition Text:
The purpose of this project was to redesign the Milwaukee flag. The problem with the current flag is that it is way too detailed with too many symbols present, so I focused on trying to create a flag with the most important symbols and simply keep the design simple. I tried to create a flag that could be recognizable of only Milwaukee and not get mistaken by another city flag. Therefore I created the letter "M" based on three sort of wave linings that represent the three rivers that Milwaukee was "built on". The background in a lighter blue color represents lake Michigan which is where these three rivers connect. The gray lining represents the industry in Milwaukee for example its great company Harley Davidson motor production.

- Keep it simple
- Use meaningful symbolism
- 2-3 basic colors
- No lettering or seal
- Be distinctive
3.)Start exploring your ideas on the medium you prefer.
I knew that I wanted to base my designs on how Milwaukee was" built" at the confluence of the three rivers on the shore of lake Michigan: The Milwaukee ,Menominee ,and the Kinnickinnic. I also wanted to somehow include in the design how Milwaukee is such a multicultural city.
Design ideas:
Research:
As I began researching more about the history of the city of Milwaukee ,I believed an important detail was how it was founded on the three rivers to which I decided to base my design on. With my previous knowledge and looking more into depth of the topic, I knew that Milwaukee has been known for being a very diverse city and I thought this would be a recognizable aspect which would therefore make the flag be defining of what the city of Milwaukee represents.

Artist Inspiration:
The artist that inspired me to develop my design was Walter Landor after having researched some of his logo designs I found them to be very simple yet so genius in the way he made a connection with the product to be able to identify the brand right away.He includes the letter of the brand sometimes with the form of the product being advertised.I kept my design simple yet representative of the city of Milwaukee. And I intended to use the form of the letter by representing it in a wave form therefore symbolizing the rivers Milwaukee was built on.

Meaning behind my art piece:
Me flag design is basically three waves that essentially form the letter "M" obviously representing Milwaukee, the reason I did the three waves was to represent How Milwaukee was built at the confluence of the three rivers on the shore of Lake Michigan.Which are the Milwaukee, Menominee and the Kinnickinic. The gray lining along the outer of the first wave in a way represents the industry In Milwaukee ,it is very recognizable for its production of Harley Davidson Motors.

Reflection:
Overall I think this project was pretty fun to do because of the simple thought of how awesome it would be if our design actually got chosen to represent our city. Although it was challenging because I did not know much about the history of the city i live in , which is why I found this project not only to be helpful towards our designing abilities but helpful in our knowledge towards our city Of Milwaukee and its history. I definitely enjoy being able to experience new forms of the representations of art because it allows us to become aware of the mediums we are self conscious we would like to work in.It was definitely an interesting and difficult process, but that's what makes me even more proud of the finished product.
