Media: Magazine pages
2016
Exhibition Text: For this project the goal was to develop something that would portray the idea of industrial vs organic. This could either be done by creating something out of industrial materials into something of organic matter or vice versa creating something out of organic materials to create something industrial. I decided to create a butterfly piece representing the organic portion of the project, and I created this shape with the use of magazine pages which is representing the industrial aspect. I particularly chose the pages not just elected which ever pages I wanted variety to show how everything that is present within our lives, our homes seem to have many industrialized things which tend to have a critical effect on our earth.
Process:
-Begin brainstorming ideas about what you want to portray through the artwork as well as which artist or artwork you would like to get inspired by.
-Think of a topic that is important to take notice on and brainstorm ideas of how you could represent this.
-I chose to create the figure of a butterfly with magazine pages that had pictures of industrialized things.

This image is an image of a living room essentially which has been industrialized to appear a certain way which is acceptable to the society.

The women in this image has makeup on which represents the industrial aspect. This is what society nowadays views as the only way to look beautiful. The woman's sparkly jacket and ring are also a great symbol for industrial things.
|
This is another image which represents the industrialized world we live in. As seen this can be looked at by contemplating the patterned pillow, the elegant sofa etc.

The process to creating this art piece was when electing the image with something representative of the industrial aspects that are in our daily lives I rolled them up and attached the ends with scotch tape. After I attached all of these rolled up pages to the form in the middle which was essentially imitating the body of a butterfly.
The scotch tape I used to be able to create these forms was double sided. This was very helpful for the assemblage of the piece as a whole.
Artist Inspiration:
The artist that inspired me to develop this specific piece was Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol's work explores the relationship between artistic expression celebrity culture and advertisement that occurred in the 1960 s. Once you see pop art of Andy Warhol you cant see America in the same way. In his multiple images, endlessly repeated as in saturated advertising. Most specifically I got inspired by his art piece Campbell Soup cans which he developed in 1962.In this artwork Andy repeats an image of a mass produced consumer good. Which in a way is delivering the idea of just how industrialized the world had got in this time. This is why I chose to pick a lot of different images to projectile this idea. This idea as well of saturated advertising.

Meaning behind the piece:
This is a manifestation and a way to get people thinking of how industrialized our world has become and how these sometimes have a critical effect on the planet as a whole. Sometimes many of the products that are consumed are elaborated factors which release an excess amount of carbon dioxide that is critical on the ozone layer. It is important to take note and begin to think about how this is a big problem which we should try to somehow limit the use of industrialized products that are not necessary and more of a luxury. There is an excessive amount of advertisement in America and an excessive production of masses, this as mentioned prior can be a critical contributor to the damage of the ozone layer.

Reflection:
Overall this was a very interesting project to have to develop. I was excited of being to utilize any materials to create this piece. It was difficult when coming up with the idea, as well as coming up with the way to elaborate it as a whole. I decided to base my project on how we use so much industrialized things on our daily lives. Some challenges that surged while completing this industrial vs organic piece was in the moment of tearing out the page from a specific magazine sometimes it would come out ripped to which reason I had to elect a different page. Also I had tried taping the wing form with normal tape but it was difficult to elaborate the piece I wanted to accomplish, which as I mentioned in my process I used double sided tape that allowed the manipulation of my piece to be more exact . We can really look at this piece and think about the meaning of it. I enjoyed looking for a big problem in the world and being able to express, portray it through this different media. This idea o f industrial vs organic was by far interesting to not only come up with the idea but formulate it.
